Theresa May’s leadership in danger on her customs’ plan
- UK ministers split 6-5 against Theresa May’s proposal.
- The leadership of the UK prime minister is in danger while local elections and the replacement of Rudd already put pressure on the GBP.
Theresa May is dealing with a strong crisis as pro-Brexit ministers are teaming up with the Conservative party to demand a clean break from the EU’s customs system. Therefore, rejecting May’s compromise solution. Theresa May was outnumbered in her inner cabinet and she might have as little as a week to get a compromise or make a choice of staying in the EU’s customs union or just leaving without any deal.
Theresa May intends to leave the EU’s customs union and she additionally requests that there should be no hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland and also no border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. She also wants the UK to negotiate its own trade deals and the trades with the European Union should be as smooth as possible.
Analysts argue that the local elections and the replacement of pro-EU Home Secretary Amber Rudd with pro-Brexit Javid will likely put the British pound under pressure. Now questioning the leadership of the UK prime minister can further compound the GBP weakness.
